Innovative Pipework Cleaning Solution

Project: Pipework Cleaning
Date: June 2024
Challenge: Blocked Pipework in the Galley System

Overview

AIIR Environmental was hired to address an emergency issue. The ship’s galley drainage systems were backing-up into the galley kitchens as a result of severe blockages caused by a buildup of fats, oils, and greases (FOG). This problem not only restricted the efficiency of the pipework but also posed potential health and safety hazards for the crew.

Problem

The pipework in question was complex, with several joints and bends and consisted of narrow sections that made conventional cleaning methods inefficient and time-consuming.  In addition to the complex nature and location of the pipework on the ship there was also a risk of causing damage to the sensitive pipe infrastructure if excessive pressure was applied. Babcock required a safe, thorough, and time-sensitive solution that would minimize downtime and disruption.

Innovative Approach

AIIR Environmental introduced a new high-performance pipework cleaning jetting nozzle specifically designed for FOG removal in confined and complex pipe systems. This innovative tool utilized a unique configuration of rotating jets to break down and remove stubborn deposits without the need for high-pressure blasting, ensuring a thorough clean without risking structural damage.

Implementation

The AIIR Environmental team, led by our Contract Manager with over a decade of experience supporting the site, mobilized swiftly to set up the cleaning operation. Working throughout the night and closely with the ship’s maintenance teams, AIIR established a phased approach to target the most problematic areas first, ensuring critical sections of the galley system were cleared rapidly.

Using the specialized jetting nozzle, our operatives were able to:

  • Navigate Complex Pipework Layouts: The flexible nozzle design allowed for efficient cleaning even in areas with multiple bends and tight spaces.
  • Achieve a Higher Standard of Clean: The rotating jets broke down FOG buildup into smaller, manageable particles, which were then flushed out to an AIIR Environmental Vacuum Tanker, completely, restoring full flow capacity.
  • Minimize Time and Disruption: The new method reduced the cleaning time by nearly 40% compared to traditional techniques, allowing the ship to stay on schedule for departure.

RESULTS

The deployment of this innovative nozzle was a success, resulting in:

  • Complete removal of FOG blockages across all targeted pipe sections.
  • No damage or wear to the pipe infrastructure.
  • A 40% reduction in cleaning time, minimizing disruption to ongoing maintenance work.
  • Positive feedback from Babcock’s project management team, who commended AIIR Environmental for introducing an effective, safe, and innovative solution to a long-standing issue.

Conclusion

AIIR Environmental’s commitment to bringing innovative ideas to its clients was clearly demonstrated in this project. By deploying cutting-edge technology and utilizing a deep understanding of the unique challenges posed by marine environments, we were able to deliver a tailored solution that exceeded expectations. This successful project not only resolved the immediate issue but also set a new standard for how complex pipework cleaning should be approached in future marine applications.
